Abstract

The spectrum of the past. A vision of history in four European arthouse films (1965-1975)This research about historical arthouse film tries to broaden the discourse about historical film. Therefore, we closely examined four films: Aguirre, the Wrath of God by Werner Herzog, Ludwig by Luchino Visconti, Andrei Rublev by Andrei Tarkovsky and Electra, My Love by Miklós Jancsó.Too often, the discussion about historical films gets stuck at the question if the movie treats history accurately. Furthermore, arthouse film is underexposed. In our research on four European historical arthouse films that each handle history differently, we widened the question. Historical films always contain fiction next to facts. Even if the emphasis is more on fictional elements, these films too tell something about the past. When analysing historical arthouse films and their relation to history, it is not sufficient to limit the research to a factual comparison between historical facts and their filmic use.Not only does the historical background knowledge play an important role in the reading of a film as a comment upon history; filmic parameters can also heavily influence the nature of the historical vision. To cover the multiple determining factors and their mutual relation, we created and used the concept of ‘historising lecture’. Due to the nature of arthouse film, an important role was also assigned to intermediality. Our exploration of the use of or references to other historical facts, not related to the main topic, or cultural expressions, has not only shown that intermediality is more diverse than an intertextual relation between source and text, but also – even more importantly – that the kind and range ofallusions demands a close examination of the references used, their historical, social and/or cultural meaning and the possible influence on the meaning and historising lecture of arthouse film. What historical arthouse films tell us about history is not only determined by direct references to history. Filmic elements, the role and background of the viewer and intermediality also determine the imageof history that is created. Our dynamic analytical model, where history, intermediality and filmic language are intertwined, offers a new vision on the possibilities and merits of historical arthouse film.

Abstract

Abstract

It started with a wandering journey throughout my hometown. At an age where growing up becomes inevitable, a longing for a feeling of homeliness is answered with disappointment as reality only seldom fulfills the idea or construct of what I have made this place out to be. In the constant cycle of departing and returning home, I only seem to be satisfied when I am on my way there and back, never reaching the end of the road. This in-between-zone is researched in the work of Chantal Akerman and her restless characters drifting around streets, hotel rooms and train stations at night. Home, for them, doesn’t need to be a static space, but can travel with them wherever they go. In this search, I will discuss the parallels between the different ways a home can travel and the cinematic experience. But in doing so, I will also come across another question, namely, the question of memory. Can we realistically recreate our home(town) without affecting it with these romanticized constructions? In an attempt to answer this question, I examine the idea of the real in order to find out more about this reality I am chasing. And does this reality really exist, or does it hide itself behind our eroded memories of the past. Manon de Boer’s work directly confronts us with the decay of these memories happening over time, and in showing us this inability to retell and recreate our own lives in a manner resembling reality – in other words the inability of autobiography – we are confronted with its opposite. With the truth of cinema. Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t seem to matter if something is realistic, as long as the feelings or experience in itself can evoke a sense of truth. In the final pages of this essay, I come to terms with the fact that it wasn’t leaving home, my memories, or reality that had fueled my journey, but rather it was time, haunting me throughout this essay. I finally notice that the ability to travel through time is one of the main elements both film, the home and memories have in common, and it was never about reaching the past as much as it was about the journey there.

Abstract

Sometimes people have stories to tell in their pockets. And often they didn’t choose them. My story is called Marie, and unfortunately it’s a bit sad. I said unfortunately, because I like to make people smile. I began to wonder how to share the story of an abuse and arise a deep inner smile that lasts for hours at the same time. It may seem a paradox, but I believe it’s more than relevant to find solutions that make this possible. It’s not enough to say that Marie will find love, joy and hope again in her future. It’s necessary to use other means against sorrow and I found in poetry a powerful weapon. Poetry can speak through many voices. While I was looking for the right one, I encountered three words, three precious ingredients, to accompany and enlighten Marie. Elegance, to allow lightness and simplicity to invade the story. Irony, to fight fear laughing together. Nostalgia, to merge the pieces of our past and see our lives as a compact and meaningful journey.
